A cold wet start to the day with heavy spells of rain which may turn to sleet for a time (mostly over the hills) although this should clear away to the east during the afternoon leaving behind some brighter spells as well as a few showers moving in on a fresh breeze. Low cloud and hill fog in the south should clear by mid afternoon.
