Morning update + Outlook to New Year (Possible stormy conditions followed by cold and wintry)

TODAY

Continuing cloudy today with the odd patch of fine drizzle in places. Temperature 7-8°C Wind north 2-5mph becoming west later

TONIGHT

The cloud will stay with us through most of the night, again with the odd patch of drizzle locally. Temperature 5-7°C Wind north 1-5mph

TOMORROW

After a cloudy start we will begin to see some breaks in the cloud developing, leading to a fairly pleasant afternoon of sunshine and broken cloud. Temperature 9-10°C Wind west-northwest 3-6mph becoming west-southwest 9-15mph during the afternoon

MONDAY

A generally fine and mild day with hazy sunny spell and occasional areas of cloud moving through. Temperature 10-11°C Wind moderate west-southwest

TUESDAY (New Years eve)

After a fine start it will become wet and rather windy later in the day as an atlantic system pushes in from the west. Becoming very mild. Temperature 10-12°C Wind moderate southwest becoming strong to gale

WEDNESDAY (New Years day)

This is where the complications start as we see a second system move in from the west, but as it moves in it meets the cold arctic air moving down from the north and intensifies, leading to the risk of a very potent little system bringing stormy winds, potentially in excess of 80mph if the latest data turns out to be correct. Later in the day the cold air digs in from the north, turning the rain to snow temporarily before it all clears away to the east. At this point we aren't really expecting any accumulations apart from maybe a wet sprinkling on the ground over the highest hills. However, there is also a significant chance that the rain will clear away before the coldest air arrives, leading to a somewhat more gentle transition to colder weather, but we will keep a close eye on things.

Temperature 10-12°C at first, falling to 1-3°C during the evening Wind severe gale or storm force southwest becoming fresh northwest later
