Is Hurricane Debby really likely to hit the UK?
Hurricane Debby is currently a category 1 Hurricane with sustained wind speeds at around 80mph at the moment and will be moving very slowly over the coming week but also gradually weakening as it does so.
By tomorrow it will have weakened back to tropical storm status (under 74mph) and will likely remain this way for many days to come.
By Friday it will have likely weakened even further at just tropical depression status by then with winds under 39mph, although this isn't 100% certain.
By the start of next week it will probably be moving slowly up the east coast of the US (based on the majority of models) and gradually losing all of its tropical characteristics.
Towards the latter part of next week we see it merging with the Jet Stream and turning into a regular Atlantic low pressure system.
Finally approaching the UK towards the following weekend (12 days time) along with some residual warmth from a second tropical system (red) that may perhaps invigorate things.
So to summarise all of that, it looks like some vague remnants of Hurricane Debby may pass to the north of the UK with further tropical storm remnants potentially following in behind, but at the moment there is no real sign of it having any notable impact down here on the island. Of course things may change as it is still a long way out in weather terms, but we will of course keep you up to date with any significant changes.
